Travel airfare seems to keep fluctuating all the time. Back in the old days, during the dawn of commercial air travel, fares were quite high and only the super rich could afford air travel. As more flight companies started operating more services, competition flourished and lowered the prices considerably. As a result, more people started to see flying as a more convenient mode of traveling. More patronage further brought the airfare prices down. The prices started to spiral down until they hit a plateau. There are constant ups and downs in the plateau but the overall average seems to be more or less constant. The fluctuations in oil prices have a drastic effect on the airfare prices as well. Airlines find it increasingly difficult to keep their prices down when oil prices sometimes keep skyrocketing. There are many checks and holds that are aimed at keeping the entire economy in balance.

There are a few ways however to get good discounts on airfare. People who fly frequently are given incentives by the airline to encourage them to fly more. So it is a good idea to stick to the same airline as much as possible to receive the frequent flyer incentives. These same incentives are also sometimes forwarded by travel agencies to their regular customers. It is their way of saying ‘thank you’ to their customers for their patronage, and also for ensuring that they always stay as their customers and not end up in their rival’s camp. Travel discount coupons and travel vouchers are also featured on many travel journals and magazines. These vouchers can be used to get a good discount on your travel and save a lot of money.

Many airlines also offer ‘early bird’ discounts whereby people who book their tickets well in advance get a considerable discount. If the date of your travel is fixed, it is wise to book early in order to avail these kinds of discounts. This is one of the many advantages of planning early for your trip. Even if you have to cancel the booking, if it is done early enough you may not lose much. Your travel agency might also be able to advice you on the various other options available to get a travel airfare discount.
