Some of the earliest people who took up traveling professions were sailors. A huge volume of merchandise was regularly shipped from one corner of the known world to the other during ancient times. The Mediterranean Sea, the Indian Ocean and the various inland canals were used for navigation in those days. As time went by, passengers were also taken aboard these predominantly cargo vessels. Ships with canons and other artillery were also part of the naval fleet of many empires that successively ruled the ancient world. All these ships needed efficient sailors, and these were one of the first adventurous men who took up traveling to the ends of the world as their profession.

With the advancement of technology and the invention of the airplane, men with new skills to steer these flying machines were required. The aerial counterparts of sailors were pilots who flew their planes to various corners of the earth in a fraction of the time that it took ships to journey the same distance. With air travel becoming more popular and less time consuming, people from other professions also started traveling in a big way. News reporters and journalists made good use of air travel to get to the heart of the action and bring back first hand news to their readers. Throughout history men have opted for travel bound jobs that enabled them to see various places around the world which they could never have visited otherwise.
